(2019/09/25-11:46)

Japan-Led Initiative Calls for 10 M. Fuel Cell Vehicles in 10 Years

Ministers and delegates from some 40 countries and organizations agreed on Wednesday to set a goal of increasing the number of fuel cell vehicles and aircraft in the world to 10 million over the next 10 years.
The goal was included in a chair's summary of the Japan-led Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting, held in Tokyo on the day to discuss ways to promote the use of hydrogen as a next-general clean energy source.
According to Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the number of hydrogen-powered vehicles currently totals less than 20,000 worldwide. Hydrogen emits no carbon dioxide when it is used to generate electricity and power vehicles.
The statement also called for increasing the number of hydrogen refueling stations to 10,000 from some 200 at present.
By presenting the "ambitious goals" as the chair of the ministerial meeting, Japan aims to lead global discussions on hydrogen use at a time when a slew of environmental challenges are attracting keen attention across the globe, a senior official of the ministry said.
