(2019/09/25-11:06)
Abe Criticizes Saudi Oil Facility Attacks as Contemptible
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe criticized Tuesday recent drone attacks on crude oil facilities in Saudi Arabia as a "contemptible" crime.
The attacks earlier this month were "an extremely contemptible crime that holds the international economic order hostage," Abe said in Japanese during a speech delivered in the general debate at the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
He, however, did not specify the attacker, distancing himself from the United States and Europe, which have accused Iran of being involved in the attack.
Abe is believed to continue his own mediating efforts in U.S.-Iran relations, while maintaining Japan's friendly relations with Iran.
Touching on the remarks of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, that his country will not produce, possess or use nuclear weapons, in a bilateral meeting during Abe's trip to Iran in June, Abe said that he considers Khamenei's words "precious."
