保護対象から「観光資源」へ＝トキ放鳥１１年、野生４００羽－膨らむ期待・新潟佐渡

　国の特別天然記念物トキの放鳥が始まってから、２５日で１１年。新潟県・佐渡島では現在、自然界に４００羽を超えるトキが生息しているとみられ、田んぼで餌を捕る姿などが目撃されるようになったという。環境省は野生のトキを観察できる展望施設「トキのテラス」を建設し、屋上を一般開放している。トキは保護や繁殖の対象だけでなく、地元自治体を中心に「観光資源」としての活用にも目が向けられ始めている。
　かつてトキは日本中の里山で暮らしていたが、乱獲や環境汚染で数が激減した。繁殖を試みたが２００３年に最後の１羽が死に、日本産野生種は絶滅。環境省は中国から提供を受けて繁殖を進め、０８年から野生に戻す放鳥を開始した。現在、国内の飼育施設に１９５羽、野生下の推定生息数は４０５羽まで増えた。

　飼育施設での一般公開は佐渡島以外でも、新潟県長岡市、石川県、島根県で行っている。一方、野生のトキは大部分が佐渡島で暮らす。佐渡市農業政策課トキ保護係は「佐渡なら野生下のトキを見ていただける」とアピールする。
　環境省は野生のトキを観察する際、生態に配慮して「車内で見る」「トキに近寄らない」ことなどを決めている。佐渡市は１８年１０月、こうしたルールを尊重しつつ、トキがよく訪れる場所の近くに、車外から観察できるエリアを設けた。担当者は「家族連れ、カップル、ご年配の方まで、かなりの人が訪れている」と手応えを語る。

　環境省の「トキのテラス」は高さ約１０メートルで、屋上からトキや島の自然を観察でき、２階部分はトキの生態や人との共生について紹介する展示室を設置する予定。建物はできており、展示室が完成するまでの間、屋上を一般に開放している。環境省首席自然保護官の沢栗浩明氏は「野生のトキが増えている中で、生育に影響がないように観察する役割が果たせたらいい」と期待を込めた。（2019/09/24-07:25）

The city government of Sado and others are paying attention to crested ibises as a tourism resource, in a shift from the existing view of them as birds in need of protection and breeding, 11 years after their release back into the wild.
   Wednesday marks the 11th anniversary of the start of a project to release artificially bred crested ibises into the wild in the island city in Niigata Prefecture, central Japan.
   On the island, over 400 of the birds, which are designated as a special natural treasure in the country, are believed to be out in the wild, and many people have spotted the birds catching food at rice paddies, according to city government officials.
   Japan's Environment Ministry has set up an observation facility to watch the birds and has opened the roof area to the public.
   While crested ibises once inhabited "satoyama" village forests throughout Japan, the number of such birds dwindled due to overhunting and environmental pollution.
