１円玉、薄まる存在感＝消費税１０％で切り良く

　１０月の消費税率１０％への引き上げに伴い、１円玉の存在感が薄まりそうだ。電子マネーやクレジットカードによる「キャッシュレス決済」の普及で小額の硬貨の出番が年々減っているのに加え、今回の増税で切りの良い支払額が増えれば、１円玉の使用頻度はさらに低下しそうだ。
　日銀によると、１円玉の流通枚数は現在約３７５億枚。約４１０億枚だった２００２年をピークに減少傾向が続く。１４年の税率８％への引き上げ後は需要が増えると見込まれていたが、基調は変わらず、約２０年で１割近く減った。ニッセイ基礎研究所の櫨浩一専務理事は「電子マネーの普及や、数円の端数分の支払いに店のカードのポイントが使われているため」と分析する。

　１円玉は１６年以降、毎年５０万枚前後が製造されているが、供給先はコレクション向けの「貨幣セット」用に限られる。
　政府は消費税増税に合わせ、中小店舗でのキャッシュレス支払いに対し、購入額の最大５％を還元する制度を実施する。櫨氏は「政府のキャッシュレス推進もあり、税率が１０％になれば１円玉の流通枚数は目に見えて減る」とみている。（2019/09/24-07:25）

One-yen coins may not have much of a presence in Japan after a planned consumption tax hike from 8 pct to 10 pct in October.
   In addition to the spread of cashless payments using electronic money or credit cards, an increase in payments at a round number is expected to result in less frequent use of one-yen coins.
   The one-yen coin is the minimum-denomination currency in Japan.
   According to the Bank of Japan, the current number of one-yen coins in circulation totals some 37.5 billion, continuing to fall from the peak level of some 41 billion in 2002.
   Although demand for the coins was expected to rise when the consumption tax rate was raised from 5 pct to 8 pct in 2014, the downward trend continued, with the number of one-yen coins in circulation dropping by nearly 10 pct in some 20 years.
