(2022/06/07-11:39)

Japan Household Spending Down 1.7 Pct in April

Household spending in Japan in April fell 1.7 pct from a year before in price-adjusted real terms, partly because parts shortages restricted the supply of automobiles and pushed down auto purchases, government data showed Tuesday.
Consumption spending by households with two or more members averaged 304,510 yen, down for two straight months, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said.
Spending on transportation and communications, including expenditures on cars, dropped 8.1 pct, and spending on food sagged 2.1 pct, reflecting sluggish purchases of vegetables and seaweeds.
By contrast, spending on cultural and leisure activities grew 5.4 pct, as people spent more on domestic package tours and accommodations for the country's Golden Week holiday period between late April and early May, during which no COVID-19 movement restrictions were in place for the first time in three years.
Spending on clothing and footwear went up 8.7 pct, buoyed by brisk purchases of summer clothing items. Expenditures on electricity and water charges increased 2.5 pct.
