和田誠さん死去＝８３歳、イラストレーター

　「週刊文春」の表紙絵などで知られるイラストレーターの和田誠（わだ・まこと）さんが７日、肺炎のため東京都内の病院で死去した。８３歳だった。大阪市出身。葬儀は近親者のみで済ませた。後日、お別れの会を開く予定。妻は料理愛好家の平野レミさん。
　多摩美術大図案科卒業後、広告プロダクションに入社。「ハイライト」のパッケージデザインなどを手掛けて注目を集めた。１９６８年に独立し、雑誌「週刊サンケイ」の似顔絵などで６９年、文芸春秋漫画賞を受賞。
　７７年から「週刊文春」の表紙イラストとデザインを担当。劇作家の寺山修司や作家の星新一、村上春樹らとも親交を重ね、舞台のポスターや雑誌、書籍のイラストなどを多数制作した。
　文才を発揮し、８２年に著書「ビギン・ザ・ビギン」で日本ノンフィクション大賞、９３年には「銀座界隈ドキドキの日々」で講談社エッセイ賞を受賞した。
　映画好きでも知られ、８４年に初監督の映画「麻雀放浪記」で報知映画賞新人賞、８８年に映画「怪盗ルビイ」でブルーリボン賞監督賞を受賞。９４年には美術や文筆、映画などでの幅広い業績が評価され、菊池寛賞を受賞した。（2019/10/11-16:24）

Japanese Illustrator Makoto Wada Dies at 83

Prominent Japanese illustrator Makoto Wada, known for drawing the covers of such magazines as the weekly Shukan Bunshun, died of pneumonia at a hospital in Tokyo on Monday. He was 83.
   His funeral was attended by close relatives, and a ceremony is planned for a later date. He is survived by his wife, cooking critic Remi Hirano.
   The Osaka-born artist graduated from Tama Art University. During his time at an advertising company, he designed the packaging for the Hi-lite cigarette brand.
   Wada became an independent illustrator in 1968, winning the Bungei Shunju Manga Award the following year mainly for his portraits in Shukan Sankei magazine.
   He took on the job of Shukan Bunshun cover illustrator and designer in 1977.
