(2019/10/07-15:45)

EU to Ease Import Restrictions on Japanese Food by Year-End

The European Union plans to relax by the end of this year its import restrictions on some Japanese foods that were introduced after the March 2011 accident at Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.'s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power station, it was learned Monday.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker explained the planned easing to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe when they met last month, informed sources said.
Once the EU completes its internal procedures on the easing, exporters of Japanese foods subject to the import restrictions will no longer be required to submit certificates of radiation checks, according to the Japanese agriculture ministry.
Items to be covered by the easing will include soybeans and some wild vegetables from the northeastern prefecture of Fukushima, home to the tsunami-stricken TEPCO plant, fishery products from Miyagi, Gunma and Ibaraki prefectures, and mushrooms from Nagano and Niigata prefectures, the sources said.
The EU is slated to remove its import restrictions on all food items from Iwate, Chiba and Tochigi prefectures. But restrictions will remain on some fishery products from Fukushima, and mushrooms and some wild vegetables from some prefectures, according to the sources.
