引き取り手ない遺体、４．２万体　２３年度、厚労省推計

　引き取り手がなく、自治体が火葬などを行った遺体が２０２３年度に全国で約４万２０００体に上ると推計されることが２８日までに、厚生労働省の調査で分かった。２３年の死亡者数の２．７％に当たるという。
　墓地埋葬法などは、遺体の引き取り手がいないか、見つからない場合、死亡地の市区町村が代わりに火葬すると規定。ただ、取り扱いに関する統一的な基準はなく、自治体から「対応に苦慮するケースがある」との指摘が出ている。
　厚労省は、全国の市区町村を対象に、引き取り手のない遺体や遺骨の取り扱いなどに関する調査を初めて実施。その結果、２３年度に自治体が火葬などを行った引き取り手のない遺体は推計４万１９６９体に上った。（2025/03/28-12:14）

Estimated 42,000 Bodies Unclaimed in Japan in FY 2023

An estimated 41,969 bodies in Japan were unclaimed in fiscal 2023, accounting for 2.7 pct of total deaths in 2023, a recent welfare ministry survey showed.
   The graveyards and burials law and other regulations stipulate that if no claimant is found, the municipal government of the place of death will cremate the body.
   Japan has no uniform standards for handling unclaimed bodies, however, and local governments are struggling to deal with such bodies.
   The survey on how municipalities across the country handle unclaimed bodies and remains, the first of its kind, found that only 11.3 pct of local governments had a manual for managing unclaimed bodies and remains.
