Moon Calls for Summit Talks in Letter to Abe

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has expressed his hope to hold a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in a letter delivered to the Japanese leader recently, South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said Wednesday.
In the letter, Moon expressed South Korea's position that Seoul is always open to a summit with Japan and its hope that a meeting between the leaders of the two countries would be held after pending issues are overcome, Kang said at a meeting of the South Korean National Assembly.
The letter was handed to Abe by South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon at their meeting in Tokyo last Thursday, which took place during Lee's trip to the Japanese capital to attend a ceremony for Japanese Emperor Naruhito to proclaim his enthronement.
While it was previously known that Moon called for joint efforts to swiftly resolve issues between the countries in the letter, it is the first time that Seoul revealed he had also called on Abe to hold a summit.
But Japan is cautious about holding a bilateral summit with South Korea at the moment, with one Foreign Ministry official saying, "If no progress is made between the two leaders, Japan-South Korea relations will truly come to an end."
