日系人博物館、所蔵品保存に難題　助成金削減で空調改修できず―米

　【ラスベガス時事】米ロサンゼルスの全米日系人博物館は１０日、トランプ政権による助成金削減の余波で、所蔵品の保存・管理に必要な空調設備の改修費用５０万ドル（約７２００万円）を手当てできなくなったと明らかにした。中止の危機にあった教員向けの研修は寄付が集まり実施の見通しが立ったものの、新たな難題に直面。寄付の募集を継続する。
　政権で歳出削減に大なたを振るう実業家イーロン・マスク氏率いる「政府効率化省（ＤＯＧＥ）」が、公的機関「全米人文科学基金（ＮＥＨ）」への助成金を停止。日系人博物館に対し１０日、ＮＥＨから拠出されるはずだった空調設備改修資金の全額打ち切りが通知された。第２次大戦下での日系人に対する米政府の非人道的な扱いを伝える所蔵品など１６万点以上の劣化を避けるためには、欠かせない資金だ。
　ＤＯＧＥの助成金打ち切りでは、大戦下の強制収容の歴史を伝えるため同館が取り組んできた教員研修の資金約１９万ドル（約２７００万円）も見込めなくなっていた。だが、同館が９日に緊急声明を出すと、１日足らずの間に寄付の申し出が相次ぎ、今年予定する教員７２人の旅費の半分を既に確保したという。
　研修には過去２年間で教員１００人以上が参加し、学んだ内容は２万１０００人の児童・生徒に伝えられた。バロウズ館長は声明で「全米から、あらゆる背景を持つ寄付者が支援してくださった」と謝意を示した。
　トランプ大統領は「多様性、公平性、包括性（ＤＥＩ）」推進政策を敵視。全米の博物館や図書館に資金を拠出するＮＥＨも標的となり、少数派の歴史を語り継ぐ取り組みに支障が出ている。（2025/04/12-07:07）

The Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles is facing another funding problem, after it resolved Wednesday a similar crisis caused by subsidy cuts pushed through by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
   JANM said Thursday that it became unable to pay 500,000 dollars for air-conditioning system renovation work needed to keep its collections in a good state, after Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency suspended grants to the National Endowment for the Humanities, which was to fund the work.
   Because the NEH funds were indispensable to prevent the deterioration of more than 160,000 collections, including items that tell how the U.S. government inhumanely treated Japanese-Americans during World War II, the museum will solicit donations to raise that sum of money as it did to overcome the preceding DOGE-caused funding crisis that hit its 190,000-dollar teacher training program.
   The program is now seen feasible this year, with about half of travel expenses for 72 participating teachers having already been secured since JANM issued an emergency statement calling for donations on Wednesday.
   Over the last two years, more than 100 teachers have taken part in the program, benefiting 21,000 children and students.
