(2021/03/09-11:29)

Japan Household Spending Falls at Faster Pace in Jan.

Household spending in Japan fell at a faster pace in January than in the previous month as the government declared a fresh state of emergency over the coronavirus pandemic for parts of the country, official data showed Tuesday.
January's declaration led to sharp declines in expenditures tied to eating out and in cultural and amusement expenses, the internal affairs ministry said.
Consumption spending by households with two or more members fell 6.1 pct in January from a year before to 267,760 yen on average in price-adjusted real terms, after a 0.6 pct decline in December, the ministry said.
"The situation will improve once the state of emergency is removed," a ministry official said. The emergency is in place in Tokyo and three neighboring prefectures and in effect until March 21.
Drinking expenditures plummeted 90.8 pct, a greater decline than the 90.3 pct drop marked in April 2020, when the country was under the first coronavirus state of emergency. Spending on dining fell 36.3 pct.
