はやぶさ２のカプセル回収　豪着地「完璧な状態」―小惑星の試料、分析へ・ＪＡＸＡ

　探査機「はやぶさ２」から分離されたカプセルが６日午前２時半ごろ、オーストラリア上空の大気圏に突入した。宇宙航空研究開発機構（ＪＡＸＡ）は同４時４５分ごろ、計画通り豪州南部ウーメラ付近の砂漠に着地したカプセルを発見。約３時間後に回収した。中には小惑星「りゅうぐう」の砂が入っているとみられ、日本に持ち帰って詳細な分析を進める。
　津田雄一プロジェクトマネジャーはＪＡＸＡ相模原キャンパス（相模原市）で記者会見し、はやぶさ２本体とカプセルについて「完璧な状態で帰って来た」と説明。今回の成功を「小惑星に自由に行き来する技術を実現した」と評価した。
　小惑星の砂を回収できていれば、２０１０年に初代「はやぶさ」が「イトカワ」から持ち帰って以来の快挙となる。有機物や水を含むとされる炭素質（Ｃ型）小惑星からの回収は世界初で、太陽系の成り立ちや生命の起源に迫る手掛かりになると期待される。
　直径４０センチのカプセルは５日午後２時半、高度約２２万キロではやぶさ２から分離。秒速約１２キロで大気圏に突入し、現地では流れ星のように光る「火球」が観測された。
　カプセルは高度約１０キロでパラシュートを開いて降下。現地に派遣されたＪＡＸＡの回収班はカプセルが発する信号電波（ビーコン）で位置を推定し、ヘリコプターで回収に向かった。
　現地では、回収したカプセルから揮発性の高いガス成分を７日に採取する予定。カプセルは８日にも相模原キャンパスに搬入され、試料の分析を始める。
　はやぶさ２の本体はカプセル分離後、地球重力圏を離脱するためエンジンを噴射。６年に及ぶりゅうぐうとの往復を終え、３１年に別の小惑星「１９９８ＫＹ２６」到着を目指す延長ミッションに向かった。（2020/12/06-20:33）

A capsule believed to contain sand samples from asteroid Ryugu arrived back on Earth on Sunday morning after being separated from Japan's Hayabusa2 unmanned probe the previous day.
   The capsule, about 40 centimeters in diameter, entered Earth's atmosphere above Australia around 2:30 a.m. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, found the capsule in a desert near Woomera in southern Australia around 4:45 a.m.
   If sand in the capsule is collected successfully, it would be the first such feat since the first Hayabusa spacecraft brought samples from the Itokawa asteroid to Earth in 2010. It would be the first time in the world for samples from a carbonaceous, or C-type, asteroid, which is believed to contain organic matters and water, being brought to Earth, possibly giving clues to unraveling the mystery of how the solar system was created and the origin of life.
   The capsule was separated from Hayabusa2 at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at a point some 220,000 kilometers from Earth. It entered Earth's atmosphere at a speed of 12 kilometers a second.
   Following the capsule's return to Earth, volatile gas will be collected first at the site, and samples from Ryugu will be transported to JAXA's campus in the city of Sagamihara, eastern Japan, later this month for examination.
