(2020/09/08-12:09)

Japan Household Spending Down 7.6 Pct in July

Consumption spending by households in Japan in July declined 7.6 pct from a year before in price-adjusted real terms, down for the 10th straight month, a government report showed Tuesday.
The pace of decline accelerated from the 1.2 pct in June. People curbed spending as they refrained from going out due to a resurgence in novel coronavirus cases, an official of the internal affairs ministry said. Spending by households with two or more members averaged 266,897 yen, the ministry said.
Culture- and entertainment-related expenditures plunged 21.0 pct. Spending on package tours fell nearly 90 pct, with strict border control measures remaining in place amid the pandemic. Spending was down 66.6 pct on suits and 54.0 pct on alcoholic beverages consumed during dining out.
Spending on transportation declined 61.7 pct. In normal years, many people renew their commuter passes in July. This year, however, people rushed to do so after the full lifting of the government's state of emergency over the coronavirus in late May, leading to a drop in such spending in July, according to a ministry official.
The decline in overall consumption spending in the latest reporting month came also after retailers moved up their summer sales following the lifting of the state of emergency.
