(2024/04/12-11:48)

42 Pct Oppose Extra Fees to Strengthen Child Policies: Jiji Poll

The Japanese government's plan to collect additional fees to cover measures against the country's declining birthrate is opposed by 42.1 pct of people in the country, a Jiji Press survey suggested on Thursday.
The plan was supported by 32.8 pct of respondents in the survey, in which 2,000 people aged 18 and over were interviewed nationwide over four days through Monday, with 60.4 pct of them giving valid responses.
The government initially explained that the additional fees would average 450 yen per person per month in fiscal 2028. But on Tuesday, it said that the fees are estimated to be 1,000 yen per month for people with an annual income of 6 million yen, drawing criticism from both the ruling and opposition parties.
Opponents of the extra fees were a majority in all age groups except respondents in their 40s, among whom both opposition and support stood at 36.1 pct.
By occupation, 42.4 pct of respondents who are students supported the extra fees, while 21.2 pct opposed them.
