(2023/09/29-11:08)

Tokyo Core Consumer Inflation Slows in Sept.

Core consumer inflation in central Tokyo slowed for the third consecutive month in September thanks to a bigger decrease in energy costs and a smaller climb in food prices, Japanese government data showed Friday.
The core consumer price index, which excludes volatile fresh food prices, in the Japanese capital's densely populated 23 wards rose 2.5 pct in September from a year before to 105.2 against the 2020 base of 100, climbing for the 25th straight month, the internal affairs ministry said.
Prices in Tokyo serve as a leading indicator of trends across Japan. Nationwide consumer price data for September is slated to be released on Oct. 20.
In Tokyo in September, energy prices sank 18.7 pct following August's 15.9 pct drop. Electricity and city gas fees fell 25.7 pct and 17.1 pct, respectively, due to the government's relief measures aimed at alleviating the burdens of higher prices.
Prices for food, excluding fresh food, soared 8.5 pct due to higher materials prices, but the jump was smaller than the previous month's 8.9 pct. Egg prices showed a smaller rise as the effects of an avian influenza outbreak receded.
