不明者捜索、増す厳しさ　海流複雑、長期化で範囲拡大―上陸阻むヒグマ・知床事故１カ月

　北海道・知床半島沖の観光船沈没事故は２３日で発生から１カ月が経過したが、乗客乗員２６人のうち、なお１２人の行方が分からない。周辺の海流は複雑で、専門家は「長期化で捜索範囲はさらに広がる」と指摘。陸上も険しい地形などに阻まれ、捜索は厳しさを増している。
　稚内沖から流れ込む「宗谷暖流」は、知床岬沖を境に北東へ進む流れと、半島東部の羅臼側へ南下する流れに分岐する。事故当日前後には現場北側に反時計回りの渦も発生していた。北海道大低温科学研究所の三寺史夫教授（海洋物理学）は、海流はさらに枝分かれを繰り返す動きをすると指摘し、「事故から１カ月もたつと、どこに流れていくか想像もつかない」と話す。
　海上保安庁などは範囲を広げる一方で、現場近くなどの捜索も繰り返す。不明者や漂流物は海面にとどまることなく漂い続けるため、「何度も同じ場所を捜す必要がある」（海保関係者）ためだ。
　半島周辺は急激に水深が深くなる場所があることから、潜水士による捜索も困難を極める。外洋の高い波も発見を阻む一因となっている。
　陸上からも悪条件が重なる。不明者が漂着する可能性のある半島沿岸部は、岩山から続く切り立った崖が入り組んだ複雑な地形だ。ヒグマも多数生息しており、上陸場所は限られる。海保関係者は「沿岸の浅瀬で潜水捜索などもしたいが、ヒグマに襲われる危険がある。人が立ち入れる場所が少ない」と話す。
　海保が契約した民間業者による船内外の捜索は２０日に終了し、不明者につながる新たな手掛かりは見つからなかった。海保などが海上や空から、道警が陸上からの捜索を続けている。（2022/05/24-07:06）

The search for the 12 missing people from the Kazu I tour boat, which sank off the Shiretoko Peninsula in the northernmost Japan prefecture of Hokkaido a month ago, is becoming increasingly difficult due to complicated ocean currents and other obstacles.
   As the currents are complex in the area where the tour boat disappeared on April 23, "the longer it takes, the wider the search area becomes," a pundit said.
   Of the 26 people on the boat, including two crew members, 14 have been discovered and confirmed dead.
   The Soya warm current flowing in from waters off the city of Wakkanai, located at the northern end of Hokkaido, splits into two off Cape Shiretoko--one heading northeast and another going south toward the eastern part of the peninsula.
   Around the time the boat sank, there was a counterclockwise vortex on the north of the accident site.
