(2019/12/06-17:55)

Ordinary Diet Session Seen Starting around Jan. 20

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's administration plans to convene the Diet, the country's parliament, for an ordinary session from around Jan. 20 next year, informed sources said Friday.
Abe is considering visiting the Middle East in mid-January but is seen skipping a World Economic Forum gathering in Davos, Switzerland, late that month, according to the sources.
The administration aims to get a fiscal 2019 supplementary budget through the Diet as soon as possible during the ordinary session.
The extra budget will finance measures to shore up the economy after the Oct. 1 consumption tax hike and reconstruction projects following recent typhoon disasters.
The opposition camp is poised to grill the Abe administration further over a controversial annual cherry blossom-viewing party that is publicly funded and hosted by the prime minister.
