(2021/06/11-07:06)

Japan's Presence Weak on G-7 Vaccine Talks

Japan has been weak in its response to calls to vaccinate the world against the novel coronavirus, with the country slow to inoculate its own citizens, although the issue is expected to top the agenda at a Group of Seven summit from Friday.
   Ahead of the summit of the G-7 advanced economies in Cornwall, southwestern England, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who will chair the meeting, has set a goal of vaccinating the whole world by the end of 2022.
   "The world is looking to us to rise to the greatest challenge of the postwar era" of defeating COVID-19 and leading a global recovery driven by the shared values among the G-7 countries, Johnson said in a statement, urging the other wealthy nations to commit to global health.
   At the three-day summit, the G-7 leaders will discuss how to realize the goal.
   Specifically, the leaders are expected to discuss the distribution of surplus vaccine doses to developing nations through the COVAX global vaccine sharing program.
