(2019/11/01-20:58)

Japanese, S. Korean Lawmakers Seek Abe-Moon Summit

Japanese and South Korean lawmakers on Friday called for a summit between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in to be held at an early date to repair soured ties between the two East Asian nations.
The request was included in a joint statement adopted at a meeting in Tokyo the same day between a league of Japanese lawmakers aiming to promote the bilateral friendship and a group of South Korean lawmakers working for the same goal.
Citing the wartime labor issue, tightened export controls and Seoul's decision to scrap the bilateral General Security of Military Information Agreement, or GSOMIA, as pending problems between the two nations, the statement urged the two governments to hold a bilateral summit and a meeting of senior officials early.
But the document failed to include specific measures the lawmakers' groups should take to help Tokyo and Seoul mend fences, as they failed to reach agreement.
At a press conference after the meeting, former Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura, a senior member of the Japanese league, said that the two sides were unable to come up with a unified view on the series of bilateral problems.
