(2019/09/06-12:32)

New Ainu Center's Admission Set at 1,200 Yen per Adult

A new national center to promote the culture of the Ainu, an indigenous people in Hokkaido, northern Japan, will charge adults an admission fee of 1,200 yen, the government said Friday.
For children up to junior high school age, the admission will be free for the time being at the National Ainu Museum and Park, slated to open next April in Shiraoi in southern Hokkaido, the land and education ministries said.
It will be closed on Mondays and year-end and New Year holidays.
The center is being developed under the country's first law, enforced in May this year, that recognizes the Ainu ethnic group as indigenous. Admission revenue will be spent on the management of the center and other purposes.
With an annual visitor target of one million, the center will have a museum to introduce the history of the Ainu and a facility to experience the Ainu culture.
