日米同盟の強化確認　菅首相とバイデン氏、初の電話会談―尖閣に安保条約適用

　菅義偉首相は１２日午前、米大統領選で勝利を確実にしたバイデン前副大統領と初の電話会談を行った。首相は祝意を直接伝え、新政権下でも日米同盟の強化に取り組む方針を確認した。バイデン氏は、対日防衛義務を定めた日米安全保障条約第５条について、沖縄県・尖閣諸島も適用対象となると表明した。
　大統領選ではトランプ大統領がなお敗北を認めていないが、会談後、首相は記者団にバイデン氏を「次期米国大統領」と明言した。
　首相は「日米同盟は、厳しさを増すわが国周辺地域、国際社会の平和と繁栄にとって不可欠であり、一層の強化が必要だ。『自由で開かれたインド太平洋』実現に向けて日米で共に連携していきたい」と呼び掛けた。バイデン氏は「日米同盟の強化、インド太平洋の平和と安定に協力していくことを楽しみにしている」と応じた。
　新型コロナウイルス対策、気候変動問題も日米で連携することで一致。首相は北朝鮮による拉致問題解決に向けた協力を要請し、対北朝鮮政策を含めて協力していくことを申し合わせた。
　両氏は対面での会談を早期に行うことでも一致した。首相は来年１月２０日の大統領就任式後、速やかに訪米し、首脳会談を実現させる方向で調整を進める。首相はバイデン氏との個人的な信頼関係の構築を図る考え。電話会談は１０分余り行われた。（2020/11/12-10:36）

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and Joe Biden, who is certain to have won the U.S. presidential election, agreed to strengthen the Japan-U.S. alliance, in their first phone talks on Thursday.
   Biden affirmed that the Japan-U.S. security treaty's Article 5, which stipulates U.S. defense obligations to Japan, applies to Japan's Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. The islands in Okinawa Prefecture are claimed by China.
   In the talks, which lasted about 10 minutes, Suga congratulated Biden on his victory in the presidential election.
   The prime minister said the Japan-U.S. alliance is indispensable for bringing peace and prosperity to areas around Japan where the situation has become increasingly severe and also to the international community.
   Biden told Suga that he is looking forward to cooperating in beefing up the bilateral alliance and ensuring peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
