　バイデン氏は、２頭のジャーマンシェパードを飼っている。名前はチャンプとメジャーだ。
　バイデン氏一家は２００８年からチャンプを飼っている。２０１８年には動物保護施設にいたメジャーの里親になって引き取った。
　ホワイトハウスの芝生の上で匂いを嗅ぎ回る犬の姿は、米国では昔からなじみの光景だった。
　バラク・オバマ前大統領は、ポルトガル・ウォーター・ドッグのボーの口をからかうようにつかんでいた。ジョージ・Ｗ・ブッシュ元大統領は、スコティッシュテリアのバーニーを、ビル・クリントン元大統領は、こげ茶色のラブラドルレトリバーのバディーを飼っていた。
　だが、極度の潔癖症で知られるトランプ氏は、過去１００年の歴代大統領の中で初めて犬を飼っていなかった。
