(2020/11/06-12:06)

Japan Household Spending Dives 10.2 Pct in Sept.

Consumption spending by households in Japan in September plunged 10.2 pct from a year before in price-adjusted real terms, due chiefly to the fallout from the novel coronavirus crisis, government data showed Friday.
The pace of drop accelerated from the 6.9 pct in August, also after spending surged a year before ahead of the consumption tax increase in October 2019, according to the internal affairs ministry data.
September marked the 12th straight month of a year-on-year fall. Spending by households comprising two or more members averaged 269,863 yen in the latest reporting month.
"Although there are signs of a recovery in household spending, a close watch is needed for future developments amid the continued impact of the coronavirus epidemic," a ministry official said.
In September, spending on package tours dived 61.4 pct, and that on accommodations plunged 25.7 pct. Spending on the sectors remained weak as people refrained from going out amid the coronavirus crisis although the size of decline shrank from the 87.3 pct and the 47.1 pct, respectively, from the previous month thanks partly to the government's Go To Travel tourism promotion campaign.
