(2020/05/08-20:33)
Chiba Univ., Others Find Out How Mosquitoes Fly in Dark
An international research team including Japan's Chiba University has unraveled through numerical calculations and other methods the mystery of how mosquitoes fly freely in a dark room.
Mosquitoes detect faint changes in the airflow caused by the flapping of their wings after it hits obstacles such as walls, through ultrasensitive sensors located at the root of their antennae, the team said in the U.S. journal Science on Friday.
The team includes Toshiyuki Nakata, an assistant professor at Chiba University, and Britain's Royal Veterinary College.
Through three-dimensional motion measurements of mosquitoes using high-speed cameras and simulations, the team used numerical calculations to recreate the airflow caused by a 4-millimeter-long mosquito beating its wings.
The team found out that the Johnston's organ, a sensory organ, can detect the airflow changing after coming into contact with obstacles, including walls and floors, located some 3 to 4 centimeters away.
