アイヌ文化施設、開業を再延期　６月にも地元内覧会―赤羽国交相が発表

　赤羽一嘉国土交通相は８日の閣議後会見で、北海道白老町のアイヌ文化施設「民族共生象徴空間（ウポポイ）」について、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大に伴い、２９日を目指してきた開業を当面延期すると発表した。新たな開業時期は未定。赤羽国交相は、緊急事態宣言が解除されれば、まずは６月中に地元町民向けの内覧会を開き、「状況が整えば開業に踏み切りたい」と強調した。
　ウポポイは「大勢で歌うこと」を意味するアイヌ語。昨年５月施行のアイヌ新法に基づき、アイヌ文化について情報発信するため国直轄で整備された。政府は緊急事態宣言が発令された４月７日、当初開業予定だった同２４日から５月２９日に延期することを決めた。その後、札幌市など道内でも感染者が再び急増するなど「第２波」の動きを見せており、再延期を判断した。開業前に開催予定だった記念式典も延期し、新たな日程は改めて検討する。（2020/05/08-10:55）

The opening of "Upopoy," a new Japanese national center featuring the culture of the Ainu indigenous people, has been postponed again due to the unabated novel coronavirus epidemic, tourism minister Kazuyoshi Akaba said Friday.
   The center, located in the town of Shiraoi in the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, was initially scheduled to open on April 24. But the opening was put off to May 29 on April 7, when the Japanese government declared a state of emergency over the epidemic.
   The new opening date has yet to be determined.
   Akaba told a news conference that he hopes the center will open after a private viewing for local residents in June if the declaration is lifted.
   Upopoy is an Ainu term meaning "singing in a large group." The facility named after the term was developed at the state initiative to promote the culture of the indigenous people under a new Ainu law that came into force in May 2019.
