Over 80 Pct Want Guilt-by-Association over Political Funds: Jiji Poll

More than 80 pct of people in Japan find it necessary for the country to adopt a guilt-by-association system so politicians, not only their accountants, can be held responsible for violations of the political funds control law, a Jiji Press survey showed Thursday.
According to the public opinion poll, 82.6 pct of respondents favored the idea of introducing the system through revising the law in the wake of the revelation of slush funds at the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, while 4.2 pct opposed it.
Even 81.8 pct of LDP supporters and 83.7 pct of backers of Komeito, the LDP's coalition partner, answered the system is necessary.
In the opposition camp, more than 90 pct of respective supporters of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, Nippon Ishin no Kai (Japan Innovation Party) and the Japanese Communist Party demanded the law revision.
When it comes to funds political parties provide to their lawmakers to help them cover expenses for "policy activities," 51.6 pct of the total respondents said the funds should be maintained but what they are spent on must be disclosed. Currently, the recipients do not have to list the money in their political fund reports.
