日本国際賞に米欧２氏　古代人類のゲノム解析など

　国際科学技術財団は４日、２０２０年の日本国際賞を、ネアンデルタール人の全遺伝情報（ゲノム）解読で古人類学に貢献した独マックス・プランク進化人類学研究所のスバンテ・ペーボ教授（６４）と、次世代通信規格「５Ｇ」を支える「誤り訂正」技術を開発した米マサチューセッツ工科大のロバート・ギャラガー名誉教授（８８）に授与すると発表した。
　授賞式は４月１５日に東京都内で開かれ、それぞれ賞金５０００万円が贈られる。
　スウェーデン人のペーボ教授は、発掘された骨などの形態から研究を進めてきた古人類学にＤＮＡ解析の手法を取り入れ、ネアンデルタール人と現生人類の祖先との間に交雑があったことなどを明らかにした。ペーボ教授は１６年の慶応医学賞を受賞している。
　ギャラガー名誉教授はデジタルデータの転送時に生じるエラーを検出、訂正する「ＬＤＰＣ符号」を１９６０年代に提案。当時は実用化できなかったが、近年のコンピューターの高性能化に伴って見直され、５Ｇ通信やデジタルテレビ放送などに採用された。（2020/02/04-16:31）

The Japan Prize Foundation said Tuesday it will award the 2020 Japan Prize to two foreign scientists for their contributions to research into Neanderthals and the development of fifth-generation, or 5G, wireless communications technology.
   The prize will go to Svante Paabo for his work on decoding the genome sequence of Neanderthals and Robert Gallager for the development of error correction codes enabling the 5G technology.
   The award ceremony will be held in Tokyo on April 15. Each winner will receive a prize of 50 million yen.
   Paabo, a 64-year old Swedish paleoanthropologist of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany, pioneered the application of DNA analysis for ancient bones.
   He discovered that there was interbreeding between Neanderthals and the ancestors of modern humans. He won the 2016 Keio Medical Science Prize.
