(2022/12/14-21:21)

Railway Tracks May Sink at 1,000 Viaducts in Japan

A Japanese transport ministry panel has found that the country has some 1,000 viaducts on which railway tracks may sink due to an earthquake, according to sources close to the ministry.
The ministry will hold a meeting of the panel of experts Wednesday to examine earthquake countermeasures for Shinkansen bullet trains after a major earthquake off Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan, in March caused a derailment of a Tohoku Shinkansen train, operated by East Japan Railway Co. , or JR East.
The ministry will ask JR East and others to move up the schedules for their antiseismic reinforcement work, the sources said.
It took about a month to fully reopen the Tohoku Shinkansen line as the March quake, which measured upper 6, the second-highest level on Japan's seismic intensity scale, in some areas of Fukushima and the neighboring prefecture of Miyagi, not only caused the derailment but also damaged many utility poles and viaducts.
Railway tracks on two viaducts in Fukushima and Miyagi sagged due to damage caused by the quake.
