豪森林火災、自衛隊が援助活動　東日本大震災の「恩返し」

　【シドニー時事】オーストラリアを襲っている大規模森林火災で国際緊急援助活動を行うために派遣された自衛隊のＣ１３０Ｈ輸送機２機が１６日、豪東部シドニー郊外にあるリッチモンド空軍基地に到着した。
　火災は東部を中心に約４カ月にわたり続いている。北海道の面積を超える１１００万ヘクタール以上の森林が焼かれ、約３０人が死亡。コアラなどの動物１０億匹が犠牲になった。
　今回の森林火災で、豪州が外国の軍事組織などの支援を受け入れたのは日本で４カ国目。自衛隊が大規模火災で国際援助活動に当たるのは初めてとなる。隊員ら約７０人は準備が整い次第、支援物資や消火活動に従事する人員の輸送を開始する。
　国際緊急援助空輸隊司令の太田将史１等空佐は記者団に対し「被災した方々の心に寄り添えるような支援ができれば」と強調。東日本大震災の際に豪州が支援のために空軍輸送機を派遣したことも振り返り、「恩返しをするという意味でも全力を傾注して任務を遂行したい」と述べた。
　豪空軍のカール・ニューマン准将は「支援が必要なあらゆる所で任務を行ってもらう」と期待を込めた。（2020/01/16-20:23）

Two transport planes of Japan's Air Self-Defense Force arrived at an Australian air force base near Sydney on Thursday to help Australia fight ongoing massive bushfires.
   The fires, which started some four months ago, have burned over 11 million hectares of forests mainly in eastern regions of the Oceanian country and killed 30 people. There is an estimate that as many as one billion animals, including koalas, have died.
   The C-130H transport aircraft of the ASDF and some 70 members will start airlifting relief supplies and firefighters as soon as they get ready in their first-ever international emergency assistance mission associated with large-scale wildfires.
   Japan became the fourth country to obtain the Australian government's consent on the dispatch of troops to help tackle the bushfires.
   ASDF Col. Masashi Ota, mission commander, told reporters that he hopes to provide assistance considerate of the afflicted people's feelings.
