防衛力強化、増税に慎重　西村経産相、経済への影響懸念―有識者会議要旨

　防衛力強化を議論する政府の有識者会議第３回会合で、西村康稔経済産業相は防衛力強化の財源として法人税や所得税などの増税を求める意見に対し、慎重な考えを示した。政府は１５日、議事要旨を公表。会議は９日に開かれた。
　西村氏は日本経済の現状について「ようやく変化の兆しが出ている」と指摘。増税による経済への影響に懸念を示し、「この５年間がまさに成長軌道に乗るかどうかの重要な時期であることを踏まえ、慎重に検討すべきだ」と述べた。
　会議では有識者から「国民にさらなる負担増をお願いしてでも、防衛力を強化しなければならない時期に来ている」「個人所得税の引き上げも視野に入れる必要」などの意見が相次いだ。西村氏はこれらの意見を受けて、会議終了前に発言した。
　有識者からは「新型コロナウイルス対策などでは、歳出の無駄の事例が指摘されている」などと無駄な支出の見直しを求める意見も出た。

Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura has expressed caution over the idea of raising corporate and income taxes to cover a proposed increase in the country's defense expenditures.
   Noting that the Japanese economy is "finally showing a sign of change," Nishimura voiced concern about a negative impact from the tax hike.
   "It needs to be considered cautiously, given that the next five years will be a crucial period determining whether the economy can get on a growth path," the minister said.
   Nishimura made the remarks at a meeting of a panel of experts commissioned by the government to discuss how the country should enhance its defenses held on Wednesday, according to the summary of the meeting released Tuesday.
   He spoke at the very end of the meeting after several experts advocated tax hikes for boosting the defense budget. One expert said Japan faces the need to enhance its security at the additional expense of taxpayers. Another said a rise in the income tax should be considered.
