上皇さま、８６歳に　即位行事終了に安堵

　上皇さまは２３日、８６歳の誕生日を迎えられた。４月末の退位後、初めての誕生日。天皇陛下の即位に伴う一連の行事が無事終わったことに安堵（あんど）し、喜んでいる様子という。
　退位に伴い一切の公務から退き、お住まいの皇居・吹上仙洞御所で静かな生活を送り、上皇后さま（８５）と過ごす時間を大切にしている。宮内庁によると、上皇さまの体調に変わりはなく、来年３月末までに高輪仙洞仮御所（東京都港区）に転居するため、荷物の整理を日課としている。その合間の週２、３回、皇居の生物学研究所でオキナワハゼに関する論文執筆に向けた研究などをしている。

　早朝の皇居内の散策に加え、朝食後にその日の日程が始まるまでの短時間、上皇后さまと１冊の本を交互に音読する習慣を以前から続け、現在は文芸評論家山本健吉の「ことばの歳時記」を読んでいる。夜には上皇后さまのピアノに合わせてチェロを楽しむこともあるという。
　一方、秋に台風による被害が次々と発生した際には、在位中と同様、被災地に関する報道を注視しながら被災者を案じた。太平洋戦争の激戦地パラオからの生還者２人や元国連難民高等弁務官の緒方貞子さん、アフガニスタン支援に尽力した中村哲さんらが亡くなった際には、遺族に弔意を伝えた。
　２３日は皇居で誕生日の祝賀行事が行われる。平成の間は祝日だったが、今年から平日となる。一般参賀もなくなり、これまで宮殿で行ってきた行事は今年から原則として吹上仙洞御所で行う。（2019/12/23-18:55）

Japanese Emperor Emeritus Akihito turned 86 on Monday and now feels happy as a series of events for the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito, his eldest son, have been carried out successfully.
   After retiring from all official duties following his abdication on April 30, the Emperor Emeritus currently lives a calm and tranquil life with Empress Emerita Michiko, 85, at their residence in the Fukiage section in the Imperial Palace in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward, and cherishes his time spending with his wife.
   Emperor Naruhito ascended the throne on May 1, when Japan's new era, Reiwa, started to succeed the Heisei era, which lasted about 30 years from Jan. 8, 1989, the day after the former Emperor assumed the throne.
   Emperor Emeritus Akihito remains healthy and continues preparations for moving to a new residence for him and the Empress Emerita in Minato Ward in the Japanese capital, according to the Imperial Household Agency. The couple are set to relocate to the new place by the end of March 2020. The Emperor Emeritus does research on a goby at the Biological Laboratory at the palace two or three times a week to write a research paper.
   On top of a routine walk in the palace in the morning, Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko continue their practice of reading a book aloud in turns for a short time after breakfast. They are now working on "Kotoba no Saijiki" (Yearly Chronicle of Words) of the late Japanese literary critic Kenkichi Yamamoto.
