自公推薦の渡具知氏再選　辺野古移設加速へ―沖縄県名護市長選

　米軍普天間飛行場（沖縄県宜野湾市）の辺野古移設の是非が争点となった同県名護市長選は２３日投開票され、推進派が推す現職の渡具知武豊氏（６０）＝自民、公明推薦＝が再選した。反対派の新人、岸本洋平氏（４９）＝立民、共産、れいわ、社民推薦＝は及ばなかった。移設に反対する県側には打撃で、政府は計画を加速させる見通し。選挙結果は夏の参院選や秋の沖縄県知事選に影響を与えそうだ。
　名護市長選で移設問題が争点になったのは今回が７度目で、２０１８年の辺野古沿岸部への土砂投入開始後は初めて。新型コロナウイルスの変異株「オミクロン株」の感染が急拡大する中での異例の選挙戦となった。
　有権者数は４万９９５９人。投票率は市長選で過去最低の６８．３２％で、前回を８．６０ポイント下回った。
　渡具知氏は、米軍再編交付金を財源に保育料や給食費などを無償化してきた実績をアピール。コロナ対策にも全力を挙げる姿勢を強調した。一方、「辺野古は争点にならない」として、前回に続き計画の是非には言及しない戦略を取った。
　これに対し岸本氏は、在沖米軍基地からオミクロン株による感染が広がったと主張。基地建設の危険性を訴えたが届かなかった。
　玉城デニー知事は昨年１１月、辺野古の軟弱地盤改良に必要な政府の設計変更申請を不承認とし、市長選でも岸本氏と連携して反対を訴えた。ただ、移設先で反対派の首長を生み出せなかったことで求心力の低下は避けられない。
　玉城知事は名護市で記者団に「辺野古の新基地建設に反対する方向性は１ミリもぶれることがないだろう」と述べた。（2022/01/23-23:43）

Incumbent candidate Taketoyo Toguchi, supported by advocates of a controversial U.S. base relocation project, won a closely watched mayoral election in Nago in the southernmost Japan prefecture of Okinawa on Sunday.
   Toguchi's victory is expected to give the government of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida momentum to accelerate the relocation of the U.S. Marine Corps' Futenma air station from a congested area of Ginowan in Okinawa to the Henoko coastal district of Nago. He was backed by the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito, which push ahead with the relocation project as the ruling parties in national politics.
   Former Nago city assembly member Yohei Kishimoto, a first-time candidate who is opposed to the relocation project, fell short of ousting the incumbent mayor. He had support from the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, the Japanese Communist Party, the Social Democratic Party and Reiwa Shinsengumi.
   The outcome will likely give a blow to the Okinawa prefectural government, which has been opposed to the relocation project. It is expected to have impacts on this summer's election for the House of Councillors, the upper chamber of Japan's parliament, and the Okinawa gubernatorial race in autumn.
   The poll became the seventh Nago mayoral election focusing on the base relocation issue and the first since the central government started setting soil in the planned reclamation area in Henoko in 2018.
