(2019/12/06-18:11)

7 Automakers Told to Start Fresh Probes over Takata Air Bag

Japan's transport ministry instructed seven automakers Friday to launch investigations and consider recalls after a fatal accident in Australia involving a passenger vehicle equipped with an old air bag made by Takata Corp.
The instruction is based on the road transport vehicle law. Some 150,000 vehicles in Japan are believed to have the same type of Takata product, the ministry said. Takata changed its name to TKJP Corp. in 2018.
According to the ministry, an abnormal rupture of the air bag's gas generator happened in the driver's seat of a BMW passenger vehicle in June this year, inflicting heavy injuries to a person.
Another abnormal rupture occurred in September and killed a person. The Australian government has begun an investigation.
The gas generator was produced between 1995 and 1999. Abnormal ruptures have been also confirmed in the United States and Cyprus, the ministry said.
