「誇り取り戻した日」　米統治に不満爆発―コザ暴動５０年・沖縄

　１９７０年１２月に起きた沖縄の住民による米軍関係車両焼き打ち事件「コザ暴動」から２０日で５０年。本土復帰を１年半後に控えた沖縄で、民衆が初めて目に見える形で米軍への怒りを表した出来事だった。米軍統治下で米軍人らによる事件や事故が相次いだ沖縄では、「沖縄が誇りを取り戻した日」として記憶されている。
　事件は、沖縄本島中部にあるコザ市（現沖縄市）の道路で未明に発生。米兵が運転する乗用車が住民男性をはねる事故が起き、集まった通行人は駆け付けた米軍憲兵隊らに罵声を浴びせた。騒ぎが広がり憲兵隊が威嚇発砲すると、住民の怒りは爆発。米国人車両への投石や放火が繰り返された。
　背景には、さまざまな要因があったと指摘されている。事件の９日前、県南部で主婦をひいて死亡させた米兵が軍事裁判で無罪となったことに対する不満が特に大きかったという。朝鮮戦争やベトナム戦争で前線基地となった沖縄では５０～６０年代、米軍による土地の強制接収や軍用機の墜落、女性に対する暴行など、基地と米兵が絡む事件が続いていた。
　当時、事件直後の光景を目撃したという沖縄国際大の石原昌家名誉教授は「米軍に支配された２５年の屈辱がどれだけ耐え難く根深いものだったかを示すメッセージだった」と説明。「沖縄は軍事的植民地そのもので、事件は市民蜂起であり、『沖縄の住民が人間としての誇りを取り戻した日』だった」と振り返った。（2020/12/20-07:20）

As Sunday marks 50 years since the Koza Riot in then-U.S.-occupied Okinawa, many in the southernmost Japanese prefecture remember the protest as "the day Okinawa regained its pride."
   The riot, which occurred in the former city of Koza, now the city of Okinawa, was the first major instance of Okinawa residents expressing their anger against U.S. forces stationed on the island.
   In the incident, a car driven by U.S. military personnel ran over a local man in the early morning, causing passersby to shout at U.S. military police officers who arrived at the site. After the police fired warning shots, the crowd burst into anger and began rioting, throwing rocks at and setting ablaze U.S. vehicles.
   The outburst is thought to have been the product of many factors, most significantly public dissatisfaction after a U.S. serviceman who ran over and killed an Okinawa woman in the southern part of the island was found not guilty in a court-martial just nine days before the riot.
   The protest also followed incidents involving U.S. military bases and personnel, including forced requisition of land, military aircraft crashes and assault cases against women, in the 1950s and 1960s, when Okinawa was at the forefront of U.S. efforts in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
