(2019/10/24-19:00)

Rengo to Demand Minimum Hourly Wage of over 1,100 Yen

The Japanese Trade Union Confederation, or Rengo, said Thursday that it aims to achieve a minimum hourly wage of over 1,100 yen in next year's "shunto" spring wage negotiations.
The umbrella body for labor unions across the country also said it will call for a pay scale hike for the seventh consecutive year next year and demand a pay scale increase of around 2 pct as sought for the 2019 shunto.
In its basic plan for the 2020 shunto, Rengo said that it aims to achieve an hourly wage of 1,700 yen and a monthly salary of 280,000 yen for employees who have been working for 17 years or equivalent.
It was the first mention by Rengo of specific wage targets in its basic shunto plan. The move is designed to correct the wage gap between large and smaller companies as well as regular and nonregular employees.
Rengo recognized that its yearslong practice of demanding wage increases alone have had little effect on narrowing the gap. Conventional efforts alone are unlikely to bring widespread wage increases, Rengo President Rikio Kozu told a press conference.
