「牛の角突き」に歓声響く＝新潟・山古志－中越地震１５年

　２００４年１０月の新潟県中越地震が発生した日付に合わせ、国の重要無形民俗文化財「牛の角突き」（闘牛）が２３日、旧山古志村（現長岡市）で開催され、５００人を超える観客の歓声が山あいに響いた。地震から１５年を迎えた節目での特別開催。主催する山古志闘牛会の松井富栄会長（３７）は「元気にやらせてもらっていることに感謝を込めた」と話す。
　旧山古志村は地震で周辺道路が寸断し、住民は一時、全員が避難した。牛も被災し、約半数が死んだ。松井さんは当時、生き残った牛を助け出そうと十数人で現場に向かい、山を越えて１０頭程度を安全な場所に避難させたという。松井さんは「車なら５分ほどの距離に３日かかった」と振り返る。
　角突きは０５年に長岡市の臨時闘牛場で再開。山古志では０８年に仮設牛舎から牛が戻り、完全復活した。被災前は持ち主が自宅で飼うケースが多かったが、今は闘牛場近くの共同牛舎で約５０頭を闘牛会が管理する。
　この日は１０取組が行われた。東京から写真仲間４人で訪れた男性（７５）は「真剣勝負で、こんなに感動するとは思わなかった。歴史がある闘牛を続けてほしい」と話した。闘牛会は、収益の一部を台風１５号と１９号の被災地に義援金として送る予定だ。（2019/10/24-07:05）

Traditional bullfights were performed Wednesday in the Yamakoshi district in the city of Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, as a special event to mark the 15th anniversary of a powerful earthquake that struck the Chuetsu central region of the central Japan prefecture.
   Cheers from over 500 spectators at the "ushi no tsunotsuki" event echoed across the mountainous area. Tomie Matsui, the 37-year-old head of the Yamakoshi bullfighting association, the organizer of the event, expressed gratitude for being able to show bullfights, designated by the government as an important intangible folk cultural asset.
   All residents of the district, formerly the village of Yamakoshi, were temporarily evacuated after the quake occurred on Oct. 23, 2004.
   About half of the cattle died there in the disaster. Matsui and a dozen others went to rescue the surviving cattle. They crossed a mountain to take some 10 animals to a safe area.
   "We spent three days traveling a distance that takes only five minutes by car," Matsui recalled.
