スポーツ用義足の先駆者　人に寄り添い「夢かなえたい」―臼井二美男さん

　スポーツ用義足を国内で初めて作り、現代の名工に選ばれた義肢装具士臼井二美男さん（６５）。利用者に寄り添い、その夢をかなえたいという情熱で、障害者の陸上クラブや妊婦用の義足など、世にないものを生み出してきた。「この仕事は技術が７割、人と向き合う部分が３割」と語る。
　２８歳で義肢製作の世界に飛び込んだ。義足は利用者と面談を重ね、調整を繰り返して完成させる。技術だけでなく精神面のサポートも必要で、難しさはあったがやりがいも大きかった。担当した利用者は３０００人を超える。
　ハネムーン中に海外で初めて見たカーボン製のスポーツ用義足。外国語の文献を調べて部品を輸入し、工夫を重ね再現した。装着した女性が数歩走り、「もう一度走れた」と涙を流す姿に胸を打たれ、１９９１年に切断障害者の陸上クラブを立ち上げた。
　走ることで患者は自信を取り戻し、生活を変えていくという。手探りで始めた活動だったが、徐々に広がり、複数のパラリンピック出場者も輩出。自身も技術スタッフとして各大会に携わる。
　生活用義足では、「もう一度ミニスカートをはきたい」という女性の声に応え、肌の質感を再現した「リアルコスメティック義足」を開発。妊娠で腹囲が変わっても接合できる「マタニティ義足」も、患者の悩みから生まれた。光る義足などを使った障害者ファッションショー開催など、「夢を持ち、前向きな人生を過ごせる」ための活動を今も続けている。（2020/11/07-07:18）

Fumio Usui, 65, was selected as a contemporary master craftsman after making prosthetic legs for athletes for the first time in Japan and giving support for more than 3,000 users.
   Since he was 28, Usui has devoted himself to the production and supply of artificial legs for not only athletes but women who want to wear short skirts and pregnant women.
   "Skills make up about 70 pct of my job and 30 pct is about coming face-to-face with other people," Usui said.
   He jumped into the business after seeing prosthetic legs for athletes made of carbon fiber during his honeymoon trip abroad. In 1991, he established an athletic club comprising members with their legs severed.
   Usui's desire is to understand the feelings of people who need such artificial legs and make their dreams come true.
