はんこ彫刻４８年　「脱」広がりも、文化継承を―京都の前川幸夫さん

　現代の名工に選ばれた京都市の印章彫刻工、前川幸夫さん（７１）は、はんこのデザインから仕上げまでを全て手作業で行う職人で、卓越した彫刻技術、文字表現に定評がある。「美しいものを作りたい」と４８年間、丹精を込めてはんこを彫り続けてきた。「脱はんこ」の動きが広がる中、「どこかではんこ文化が残っていてほしい」と力を込める。
　前川さんは大学卒業後、印章店を経営する父の姿に触発され、２３歳で印章彫刻の道に。しかし、はんこ職人が腕を競う大会では思うような結果を残せない時期が続いた。自信が付いたのは大阪府印章技術展覧会（大印展）で初めて金賞に輝いた時。気付けばはんこ作りを始めて２０年以上が経過していた。前川さんは「長い道のりだった」と当時の苦労を振り返る。
　この半世紀の間に、印章業を取り巻く環境は職人の高齢化や後継者不足により大きく変化した。機械化が進む中、前川さんは手作りにこだわり続けてきた。「良いもの、美しいものをという思いで一つ一つを一生懸命彫ると、唯一無二の作品が出来上がる。印影を確認した時の達成感が醍醐味（だいごみ）」とほほ笑む。
　新型コロナウイルス感染拡大や政府によるデジタル化の推進を背景に、はんこ文化を見直す動きが加速している。前川さんは「世の中が良くなるのなら仕方のないことなのかなと思う。それでも、良いものを作ることに尽くしていきたい」と力強く語る。はんこの意義は「書類に対する責任の所在をはっきりさせることにある」と訴え、「（はんこ文化が）全部なくなるのはつらい。はんこも大事なものと思ってほしい」と話す。（2020/11/07-07:17）

Yukio Maekawa, a 71-year-old maker of "hanko" personal seals, was picked as a master craftsman by the labor ministry at a time when the government of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is trying to get rid of hanko seals from administrative work and services.
   "I desperately hope that the hanko culture will continue to exist wherever possible (in Japan)," said Maekawa, who is known for his outstanding engraving and character design skills.
   He started his career as hanko engraver when he was 23, but could not become confident of his skills until winning the top prize at a sphragistic technology exposition in Osaka Prefecture 20 years later.
   Environments surrounding the hanko industry changed drastically in the past half century, with the aging of hanko makers and a lack of successors.
   Manpower shortages have helped automate production processes. However, Maekawa has kept putting emphasis on the significance of making hanko entirely by hand.
