大坂、一転準決勝出場へ　２９日にメルテンスと対戦―テニス

　【ニューヨーク時事】テニスで女子シングルス世界ランキング１０位の大坂なおみ（日清食品）が、２８日に予定されているウエスタン・アンド・サザン・オープン（米ニューヨーク）準決勝に出場する意向を示したと、英紙ガーディアン（電子版）が２７日伝えた。大会主催者は２７日に新たなスケジュールを発表し、大坂と同２２位のエリス・メルテンス（ベルギー）の準決勝が２８日午前１１時（日本時間２９日午前０時）に組まれた。
　大坂は２６日の準々決勝後、米ウィスコンシン州で黒人男性が警官に銃撃された事件に抗議するため、準決勝を棄権する意向を自身のツイッターで表明していた。その後、主催者は２７日の試合を中断し、２８日に再開すると発表した。
　同紙は大坂の「棄権を表明した後、（主催者側と）話し合って金曜日（２８日）に試合を行う要請に合意した。大会を中断してくれたことで、多くの関心を集めたと思う」などのコメントを掲載した。（2020/08/28-09:07）

Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka will play in the Western & Southern Open semifinals, put off to Friday after she announced her withdrawal from the competition, The Guardian said in Thursday's electronic edition.
   On Wednesday, the world's 10th-ranked player said in a statement posted on Twitter that she intends to abstain from the semifinals to join protests against a police shooting of a black man in the U.S. state of Wisconsin.
   After "lengthy consultation" with the organizers of the competition following her announcement, "I have agreed at their request to play on Friday," Osaka said in a statement to the British newspaper.
   The organizers "offered to postpone all matches until Friday and in my mind that brings more attention to the movement," she added.
