マヤ文明で最古、最大　遺跡の公共建築物発見―メキシコで国際調査団

　メキシコ南東部にあるマヤ文明の「アグアダ・フェニックス遺跡」で、紀元前１０００年から同８００年にかけて造られた巨大な土造りの祭祀（さいし）施設を発見したと、米アリゾナ大の猪俣健教授や茨城大の青山和夫教授らの国際調査団が発表した。マヤ文明で最古、最大の公共建築物だという。論文は３日付の英科学誌ネイチャー電子版に掲載される。
　この祭祀施設は「基壇」と呼ばれ、平たい舞台のような構造。航空機からレーザー測量を行った結果、南北１４１３メートル、東西３９９メートルの長方形で、地面からの高さは１０～１５メートルと判明した。付近には砂利で舗装した大規模な道路や、雨水をためる人工貯水池などがあった。

　当時は主要作物トウモロコシの品種改良が進み、狩猟採集で移動する暮らしから定住するようになった時期。青山教授は「社会階層が未発達で、指導者はいたかもしれないが、王様はいなかった。人々が共同で大基壇を造り、太陽崇拝などをしていたと考えられる」と話した。（2020/06/04-00:13）

An international team of researchers has announced the discovery of a huge earthen ceremonial structure built between 1,000 and 800 B.C. at Aguada Fenix, a Maya site in southeastern Mexico.
   The structure is the oldest and the largest public facility built by the Maya civilization, according to the team, including University of Arizona professor Takeshi Inomata and Ibaraki University professor Kazuo Aoyama.
   The team's findings have been published in the online version of the British journal Nature.
   An aerial laser survey showed that the rectangular structure, which resembles a platform, runs 1,413 meters north to south and 399 meters east to west and is 10-15 meters tall.
   The team also found large roads paved with gravel and an artificial reservoir near the structure.
