トラック運転手に懲役１４年　飲酒運転「危険性顧みず」―児童５人死傷事故・千葉地裁

　千葉県八街市で昨年６月、飲酒運転のトラックが下校中の小学生の列に突っ込み、児童２人が死亡、３人が重傷を負った事故で、自動車運転処罰法違反（危険運転致死傷）罪に問われた元運転手、梅沢洋被告（６１）の判決が２５日、千葉地裁であり、金子大作裁判長は懲役１４年（求刑懲役１５年）を言い渡した。
　被告は起訴内容を認め、量刑が主な争点だった。
　金子裁判長は、取引先や上司から酒臭さを指摘されながら、被告が運転前の飲酒を続けていたと指摘。「飲酒運転の危険性を顧みず、運転に臨む態度は最悪のものだ」と強く非難した。
　被害に遭った児童５人については「恐怖は計り知れず、肉体的、精神的苦痛は大きい」と言及。被害者の家族に関しても、「生活は一変し、その悲しみや苦しみは続き、癒えることがない」と述べた。
　黒いジャケット姿の梅沢被告は、終始うつむいて判決を聞いていた。判決後、被害者家族一同は代理人を通じ、「なぜ（求刑の）１５年を下回る判決になってしまったのか理解できないし、受け入れることはできない」とコメントした。（2022/03/25-19:54）

A Japanese court sentenced Hiroshi Umezawa, a 61-year-old former truck driver, to 14 years in prison on Friday over a drunken driving incident near Tokyo that left two elementary school children dead and three other children severely injured last year.
   Public prosecutors had sought a 15-year prison term for Umezawa, charged with dangerous driving resulting in death and injury.
   Umezawa had pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol and plowing into a line of schoolchildren in the city of Yachimata in Chiba Prefecture on June 28 last year.
   During his trial, it came to light that Umezawa used to drive under the influence of alcohol two or three times a week. Public prosecutors said that his habitual drunken driving led to "one of the worst ever cases of drunken driving" in the country.
   The defense side sought leniency, saying that Umezawa deeply regretted his actions. In his closing statement, Umezawa said that he could offer nothing but apologies.
