今年の漢字「令」　新元号を反映―京都・清水寺

２０１９年の「今年の漢字」に選ばれた「令」を揮毫（きごう）する清水寺の森清範貫主＝１２日、京都市東山区

　漢字１文字で今年の世相を表す「今年の漢字」に「令」が選ばれ、京都市東山区の清水寺で１２日、森清範貫主が揮毫（きごう）した。新元号が令和に決まり新たな時代の希望を感じさせたことや、「令」の持つ「良い・立派な」などの意味、書き方にも注目が集まったことを反映した。
　発表は今年で２５回目。毎年、日本漢字能力検定協会（同市）が１文字を全国から募集し、票数の最も多かった漢字が選ばれる。
　今年は２１万６３２５票の応募があり、「令」は最多の３万４２７票を獲得。２位は新元号やスポーツ界での新記録樹立、キャッシュレス決済といった新たな制度導入を表す「新」が選ばれた。３位には「令和」やラグビー日本代表のスローガン「ＯＮＥ　ＴＥＡＭ（ワンチーム）」、ローマ教皇が来日し平和への思いを込めたことなどを象徴する「和」が入った。
　森貫主は「お互いが敬い合い、尊び合い、尊敬し合うことが『令』という字に込められていると思う」と話した。（2019/12/12-15:49）

"Rei" Picked as Kanji of 2019

"Rei," the first one of the two kanji characters for the new era name Reiwa, was chosen as kanji of the year Thursday.
   The character, whose meanings include fine and splendid, was written in calligraphy at Kiyomizu-dera, a famous Buddhist temple in the western Japan city of Kyoto, by chief monk Seihan Mori the same day.
   Rei is the 25th kanji selected in the annual poll by the Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation. Of the 216,325 votes cast this year, 30,427 went to rei.
   Reiwa began upon the May 1 enthronement of Emperor Naruhito.
   "Shin," meaning new, came in second. The character was popular apparently because of the new era, new records set in the Japanese sports world and new systems, such as cashless payment services.
