ワンピースのサンジ像除幕　復興支援の一環―熊本・益城町

　２０１６年４月の熊本地震で被災した熊本県益城町で７日、人気漫画「ＯＮＥ　ＰＩＥＣＥ（ワンピース）」の登場キャラクター、「サンジ」の銅像の除幕式が行われた。
　式であいさつした西村博則町長は、「（サンジ像は）地震で一番被害が大きかった町に勇気と希望を与える。サンジに会いに、全国の方に来ていただき、町の魅力を発信したい」と話した。
　像設置は作者の尾田栄一郎さんが同県出身であることなどから始まった復興支援プロジェクトの一環。県と出版元の集英社は主人公「ルフィ」とその仲間「麦わらの一味」の計９人の銅像を被災地に設置する計画を進めており、昨年１１月には熊本県庁敷地内にルフィ像が設置された。８日には、３体目となる「ウソップ」像が阿蘇市で除幕される。
　サンジ像は金色で、高さが台座を除き約１８０センチと設定通りの「等身大」。同町は地震で学校給食センターが被災し、パンと牛乳や、弁当などの給食しか提供できなかったことがあったため、麦わらの一味のコックであるサンジが選ばれた。（2019/12/07-12:06）

A ceremony was held Saturday to unveil a statue of a character from popular manga series "One Piece" in a Kumamoto Prefecture town pounded by powerful earthquakes in April 2016.
   The statue of Sanji "will give courage and hope to the town hit hardest by the quakes," Hironori Nishimura, mayor of the town of Mashiki in the southwestern Japan prefecture, said at the ceremony. He expressed eagerness to attract visitors and disseminate the charm of the town.
   The statue was built as part of efforts to support reconstruction from the quakes. The author of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda, was born in Kumamoto.
   The height of the golden statue of Sanji, excluding its pedestal, is some 180 centimeters, as described in the manga series.
   Mashiki was chosen as the location to establish the statue of Sanji, a chef in One Piece, as local schools could not provide sufficient meals to children for some time after the quakes.
