U.S. Senate Calls on S. Korea to Maintain GSOMIA with Japan

The U.S. Senate adopted a resolution on Thursday calling on South Korea to maintain its military information-sharing pact with Japan, which is slated to expire this week, due to Seoul's decision not to renew it.
The Senate resolution, though legally nonbinding, highlighted the significance of the pact, the General Security of Military Information Agreement, or GSOMIA, between the two Asian allies of the United States.
"I urge South Korea to continue its participation in this agreement," James Risch (R-Idaho), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who submitted the resolution, said in a statement.
The resolution said that "the suspension of GSOMIA directly harms United States national security" at a time when North Korea is "engaging in an increased level of provocations," including ballistic missile tests.
The Senate also called on both Japan and South Korea to "take steps to rebuild trust and address the sources of bilateral friction, insulate important defense and security ties from other bilateral challenges, and pursue cooperation on shared interests."
