都議選、投票進む　衆院選の前哨戦

　任期満了に伴う東京都議選（定数１２７）の投票が４日、１８００カ所余りの投票所で行われている。自民党と選挙協力する公明党が、合わせて過半数の議席を獲得できるかに加え、小池百合子知事が特別顧問を務める地域政党「都民ファーストの会」が第１党の勢力を維持するかが焦点。一部の地域を除いて午後８時に投票が締め切られ、即日開票される。大勢判明は深夜になる見通し。
　秋までに行われる衆院選の前哨戦として、各党は国政選挙並みの態勢で臨んだ。今回の結果は、与野党の選挙戦略に大きな影響を与えそうだ。午後６時現在の投票率は２５．３５％で、前回（３２．３６％）を下回っている。
　立候補者数は４２選挙区で計２７１人。党派別の内訳は、都民ファ４７（現有議席４６）、自民６０（同２５）、公明２３（同２３）、共産党３１（同１８）、立憲民主党２８（同７）、日本維新の会１３（同１）、地域政党「東京・生活者ネットワーク」３（同１）、国民民主党４（同０）、嵐の党２（同０）、れいわ新選組３（同０）など。１選挙区が無投票となり、自民、立民両党の各１人の当選が決まった。
　選挙戦では、東京五輪・パラリンピック開催をめぐる対応や新型コロナウイルス対策を中心に論戦が交わされた。また、今回の都議選で、コロナに感染して自宅などで療養中の有権者を対象とした郵便投票制度が初めて適用された。
　都選挙管理委員会によると、３日までの期日前投票者数は１４２万５１９２人で過去最多となった。（2021/07/04-19:09）

Voting started at some 1,800 polling stations for a Tokyo metropolitan assembly election on Sunday, with a total of 271 candidates vying for 127 seats in 42 electoral districts.
   The poll has been closely watched as a precursor to the next election for the House of Representatives, the all-important lower chamber of the Diet, Japan's parliament, which must be held by this autumn. The results of the Tokyo election will certainly affect Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's strategy on dissolving the Lower House.
   Attention has been paid to whether the country's ruling Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito, the LDP's coalition partner in national politics, can together secure a majority of the Tokyo assembly seats and whether regional party Tomin First no Kai (Tokyoites first group), for which Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike serves as special adviser, can maintain its position as the biggest force in the assembly.
   The election comes as the 23 special wards and other areas of Tokyo have been in a novel coronavirus pre-emergency stage since June 21 after a state of emergency over the epidemic ended the preceding day for the whole of the Japanese capital.
   Voting will end at 8 p.m. (11 a.m. GMT), except in some areas, and vote counting will start immediately after that.
