「みんなで作った宝物」　五輪聖火台、６１年ぶり故郷に―埼玉・川口

　１９６４年の東京五輪で使用された聖火台が、６１年ぶりに製作地である埼玉県川口市に戻った。川口市は「鋳物の街」として知られ、聖火台は地元の鋳物師だった鈴木萬之助さんと三男の文吾さんが心血を注いで完成にこぎ着けた。２人は既に亡くなったが、四男の昭重さん（８４）は「おやじの最後の仕事。川口のみんなで一つの宝物を作った」と振り返る。
　聖火台は５８年のアジア競技大会用に製作された。高さ２．１メートル、重さ約４トンで納期は３カ月、費用２０万円という割に合わない仕事だった。大きな会社は断ったが、当時６８歳で既に仕事を引退していた萬之助さんが引き受けた。
　長男に譲った工場ではなく、市内の別の作業場を借りて文吾さんと共に取り組んだ。同年２月１５日に聖火台の型が完成。鉄を流し入れる「湯入れ」をしたが、圧力でボルトが外れてしまった。
　失敗のショックで萬之助さんは寝込んでしまった。持病も悪化し、１週間後に亡くなった。病床でも「（型に使用する）ボルトは４分（ぶ）ではなく６分にしろ」と話していたという。昭重さんは「最期まで仕事のことを考えていた。本当の職人だった」と語る。

　納期は残り１カ月。毎晩、仕事を終えた地元の職人仲間が工場に集まって文吾さんを中心に不眠不休の作業を進め、３月半ばに完成した。
　６４年の東京五輪には新しい聖火台を作る話も出た。しかし、当時の担当大臣が「命を賭けて作った聖火台をなんで使わないんだ」と発言。再び使われることになった。開会式の日、仕事で長野県を訪れていた文吾さんはテレビで聖火台を見て、涙を流したという。
　文吾さんは亡くなる０８年まで、毎年１０月１０日ごろに妻と一緒に旧国立競技場を訪れ、聖火台の手入れをした。昭重さんは「毎年磨いていなかったら、ボロボロになっていただろう」と感慨深げに話す。
　聖火台は旧国立競技場の解体に伴い取り外され、東日本大震災で被災した岩手県や福島県などで巡回展示された。１０月３日に川口市に戻り、来年３月ごろ新国立競技場に運ばれる予定。（2019/11/18-07:03）

The Olympics cauldron used in the 1964 Tokyo Summer Games has been taken back to Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture, eastern Japan, the place where local craftspeople put their hearts and souls into the metal-casting work to produce a symbol of the quadrennial sporting event.
   While the original metal casters, Mannosuke Suzuki and his third son, Bungo, have already passed away, Mannosuke's fourth son, Akishige, 84, welcomed the brief return of the Olympics cauldron with deep feelings.
   "This is my father's last work," Akishige said. "People in Kawaguchi worked together to create a treasure."
   Previously placed at the now-demolished old National Stadium in Tokyo, the cauldron returned to Kawaguchi on Oct. 3, after a tour of locations in northeastern Japan that were hit hard by the 2011 powerful earthquake and tsunami, including the prefectures of Iwate and Fukushima. It will remain on display in Kawaguchi until around March 2020, before being set up at the new National Stadium, now under construction on the site of the old stadium for use during the Tokyo Summer Games in the same year.
   The cauldron was originally produced for use at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo. The task did not pay well, with craftspeople asked to deliver a casting work of 2.1 meters in height and about 4 tons in weight in three weeks for 200,000 yen.
