(2019/11/15-12:57)

Abe's Record-Breaking Tenure Rocked by Fresh Scandals

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is facing fresh allegations including of using a government event to entertain his supporters and violating laws, ahead of his tenure as the government's top leader passing the time in office of any of his predecessors next week.
At the center of the latest scandals is a prime minister-hosted cherry blossom-viewing party that has taken place almost every spring since 1952.
Abe is under fire for inviting a number of his backers to the publicly funded party, designed to recognize achievements and merits of people in the cultural, entertainment, sports and political fields.
At a House of Councillors committee meeting on Nov. 8, Abe denied his involvement in the guest selections, saying the Cabinet Secretariat and the Cabinet Office were responsible.
But with doubts mounting over his claim, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga announced this week that the government will skip next spring's party to review ways to pick guests.
