Some Remains Collected from Philippines in 2010 Not Japanese

Experts suggested in 2011 that some of the remains collected in the Philippines in 2010 as those of the Japanese war dead were those of non-Japanese people, welfare ministry officials said Friday.
The problem came to light during an investigation into a case in which the remains of local residents were collected in Siberia and brought to Japan as those of Japanese who died in the region during wartime.
"We are sorry for not disclosing this matter, which has diminished public trust," a ministry official said in apology.
An investigative group will look into the reason for not disclosing the problem until now, the ministry officials said.
According to the ministry, teeth from 10 of the 2,191 sets of the remains recovered in June-July 2010 in the Philippines were examined to see if it was possible to have DNA testing on the remains collected from a southern country.
