Over 190,000 Signatures Collected for Tokyo Games Cancellation

Over 190,000 signatures were collected online as of 11 a.m. Friday (2 a.m. GMT) for a petition calling for the cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics slated to be held this summer.
The petition, started by Kenji Utsunomiya, 74, former president of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, claimed that holding the sporting event at a time when the novel coronavirus pandemic is far from over deviates from the philosophy of the Olympics as a celebration of peace.
The petition was launched on the Change.org website on Wednesday. Its English version has also been created.
Saying that the Tokyo Games would cause further suffering to medical personnel, who are already exhausted due to the pandemic, and jeopardize the lives and livelihoods of local residents and participants, the petition added that the event should be canceled in order to prevent the further spread of coronavirus infections to protect people's lives.
Some who signed the petition said that human lives are far more important than the Olympics. One signatory said, "Although it's heartbreaking to think about the feelings of athletes, I can't see (the coronavirus situation) improving in July (when the Olympic Games will open)."
