鎮魂の花火夜空に＝中越地震１５年で追悼式－新潟

　最大震度７を観測し、６８人が死亡した２００４年１０月の新潟県中越地震から１５年を迎えた２３日、被災した各地で追悼行事が営まれた。旧山古志村（現長岡市）で行われた追悼式には約３００人が集まり、犠牲者の冥福と被災地の復興を願う花火が夜空に打ち上げられた。
　式典では地震が発生した午後５時５６分に合わせ、当時村長だった長島忠美さん（故人）の孫で、山古志小６年の忠育さん（１１）らが「希望の鐘」を打ち鳴らし、参加者は黙とうをささげた。花角英世知事は「得られた教訓を伝えていくのがわれわれの使命だ」とあいさつした。

　長岡市によると、１０月１日現在で山古志地域の人口は９２１人。地震前に比べ約６割減少した。式典後、会場の外では当時に思いをはせ、被災時の人口と同じ数の２１６７個の白い風船が空に放たれた。
　当時自宅が全壊したという畔上多作さん（７６）は「たくさん支援してもらいありがたかった」と全国から寄せられた支援に感謝し、「今は若い人に任せてのんびり暮らしている」と静かに語った。農業を営む男性（６８）は「町に出た人に帰ってきてほしい。一緒に農作業でもできれば」と進む過疎化を残念がった。（2019/10/23-20:19）

Memorial services were held in many places Wednesday to mourn 68 people killed in a powerful earthquake that struck the central Japan prefecture of Niigata 15 years ago.
   The earthquake registered 7, the highest figure on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, in part of the prefecture.
   Some 300 people attended a ceremony held in what was the village of Yamakoshi, now part of the city of Nagaoka. Fireworks were set off to console the victims and pray for the reconstruction of damaged areas.
   At 5:56 p.m. (8:56 a.m. GMT), the exact time when the quake jolted the Chuetsu central region of the prefecture on Oct. 23, 2004, a bell was rung by those including Tadanari Nagashima, 11, a Yamakoshi Elementary School sixth-grader and grandchild of the late Tadayoshi Nagashima, who was mayor of the village at the time. Participants offered silent prayers.
   "Passing down lessons we learned from the disaster is our responsibility," Niigata Governor Hideyo Hanazumi said at the ceremony.
